As of July 2019, a total of 3.6 million Takata airbags have been recalled in Australia. This figure includes both mandatory and voluntary recalls, and covers around 20% of all vehicles on Australian roads.
The majority of the recalls have been for Takata's 'alpha' airbags, which are considered to be the most dangerous type. These airbags have been linked to a number of serious injuries and fatalities, and so far around 1.7 million have been recalled nationwide.
