The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a multistate outbreak of Cronobacter sakazakii infections that has been linked to infant formula. The CDC reports that as of July 2, 2018, there are six confirmed cases of Cronobacter sakazakii infection in infants who were fed Similac baby formula. Five of the infants were hospitalized and one died.
On July 2, 2018, Abbott, the parent company of Similac, announced a recall of certain lots of its powdered infant formula due to the risk of Cronobacter sakazakii infection. The recalled lots include:
Similac Alimentum Powder
Similac Isomil Powder
Similac Pro-Sensitive Powder
Similac Expert Care NeoSure Powder
Similac Sensitive Powder
The CDC advises consumers who have purchased any of the recalled lots of Similac infant formula to throw it away. Parents who have an infant that has been fed any of the recalled formula should contact their health care provider.
